Biography - Steven Allis
Steve focuses on intellectual property law across a variety of technical fields with a particular emphasis on medical devices, material sciences, fluids, electromechanical systems, and imaging/detection systems. He focuses on extracting value from IP and innovation efforts, relying on his experience as a litigator, patent prosecutor, and patent strategy counsel. This combination of skills enables Steve to manage IP effectively and efficiently throughout its entire lifecycle, enabling a cash-positive return on his clients’ IP investment.
His experience includes working as external counsel while employed at large international law firms as a patent litigator and IP counselor. This experience includes supporting high-value litigations for large medical device companies, managing product clearance and design-around efforts to avoid or mitigate problematic IP, and assisting investors as they evaluate and engage startups seeking collaboration or investment positions. Small clients were also represented, including startups seeking to improve their IP and contractual positions as they seek investor funding.
Steve’s experience also includes service as in-house counsel for medical device and material science companies. This experience includes managing the patent and contractual needs for innovation efforts directed at new markets for these companies. This included managing litigations and the enforcement of IP and contractual rights, negotiating and executing JDA and other collaboration efforts, and the out-sale and out-licensing of IP rights. Steve’s efforts have brought in significant revenue, gaining him recognition as the only in-house attorney at these organizations to be cash-flow positive.
Prior to attending law school, Steve was a regulatory reviewer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration where he led teams of multidisciplinary scientists and clinicians in the approval and clearance of cardiovascular devices including prosthetic heart valves, various catheters, and monitoring devices. Prior to attending engineering school, Steve served in the U.S. Air Force as a medic focusing on laboratory sciences.
